How to look after your Tom Lane Candle

Candles have memory – when you first light a candle you need to set the candle memory. The size of the pool of wax on the first burn sets the memory of the candle for its lifetime. So, when lighting the candle for the first time do not extinguish it until an even wax pool reaches the edge of the glass. This may take between 3 to 4 hours. The candle will then burn evenly down to the bottom of the glass. If the candle is extinguished before the wax pool has reached the edges, you may experience the candle ‘tunnelling’, which leaves a perimeter of unburned wax around the burning candle.

To look after the wick, make sure before burning the wick is around 5mm in length. By trimming the wick this helps remove any clubbing, which is the build up of carbon that is visible at the end of the wick when burnt. Also, trimming the wick prevents the candle from sooting and stops it from leaving any black marks around the glass. It also ensures better scent diffusion and prevent high flames which are unsafe.

When extinguishing you candle use a candle snuffer, as blowing out your candle can cause molten wax to splatter and the wick may still glow and emit smoke.

When storing your candle make sure it is in a cool dry place out of direct sunlight. The candles are sensitive to temperature and light, these factors can affects the way the candle performs. Try to avoid drafts, as they burn best in still air. Also, draughts can cause the candle to smoke, soot or burn unevenly.

For best results we recommend that you use your candle within 24 months.
